The ROY families of Louisiana

The ROY families of Louisiana can be traced back to France through Canada. However, the Roys cannot be traced to only one particular individual. There were Roy families at Natichotches Post, and Pointe Coupee Post, Opelousas Post, New Orleans, and other locations during the colonial period of Louisiana.

Of the Roy's in Avoyelles, the most numerous is that of Joseph-Marie Roy . The first of this particular line of Roys to migrate from France to Canada was Nicholas Roy . He was from St.-Remi of Dieppe, son of Louis LeRoy and Anne Lemaitre. He came to Canada in May, 1662, on the ship "le Jardin de Hollande". He married at St. Therese Parish, Dieppe, Normandy, France, in 1633 Jeanne Lelievre, daughter of Guillaume Lelievre. Nicholas and Jeanne settled at Quebec, where their son Noel was born in 1633.

Noel married Jeanne Therese Casse. Jean Noel Roy , son of Noel and Jeanne, was born on June 8, 1698, thus becoming the third generation of Roys in Canada. He married Angelique LaCasse on January 25, 1725. They were the parents of Joseph-Marie Roy .
Joseph-Marie married Julie Bizet, of which there are known to have been at least seven children. They are placed in Avoyelles by 1792 through land purchase records.

There was another Joseph Roy family at Pointe Coupee earlier than that of the Joseph-Marie Roy family. Joseph called Chatellereau was a native of st. Anne de Beaupre Parish, Quebec. He married Perrine Lacour of Pointe Coupee on January 30, 1744. Perrine was the daughter of Nicholas Lacour and Perrine Brette. The ancestory of Joseph called Chatellereau can be traced through Canada to France. The first of that family in Canada was Michel Roy called Chatellereau , who was born and baptized in the Diocese of Senilet, Poitiers, France, in 1649.
